Have you hugged your daughter today?
(Just for this question, I am going to depart from my normal format of not telling you why I am thinking of any given question I ask. So, here goes.)
My daughter is leaving for college an Saturday. Is yours? Probably not. Many of you have barely even thought of your daughter leaving for college....have you?
She is 17 years old and cute as heck. I know that this has been coming on for a while. When she was 13, I guess you could say it had been coming on for 13 years. Pretty obvious isn't it. Let's see, so 13 divided by 17 is a 75% or so right. So by the time she was 13 years old, she was 75% of the way toward leaving our house.
Yep. I'm a pretty smart guy. I can figure out simple percentages. I know when my ink cartridge is 75% gone and when my shotgun shells are 75% shot up and when my fishing day is 75% gone. I know when the airplane I'm in is 75% home and when the church service is 75% over and I have a pretty good idea when a co-worker is only giving 75%.
So, I just want to go back and make sure my math is right. When she was 6, 35% of the time that she would spend in our home had already gone by. And at 8, we were up to 47% and at 10 a scary 59% of the time had slipped away. And when she was 15, she was almost 85% out the door of our house.
All this time and slow progress leading up to this day. I should be ready, right? So, are you ready Mr. Smarty Pants with your 9 year old daughter? How about you with your 6 year old little girl that is already 35% out the door?
My advice: Go give your daughter a hug while she is still at home.
