While talking to a friend recently, he was practically floored to hear how little running I had been doing. Well, I'm not sure what to say other than.... even I need a break sometimes.
Last week I ran a little over 18 miles. I can't confirm that I have run more than that since the first week in June. Wow. That even surprises me. Here is a fun fact about my running last week: I ran 3 miles in Centennial, Colorado; 3.65 miles in Denver, Colorado; 5 miles in Baltimore, Maryland; and, 6.5 miles in Washington D.C. It was very inpiring running in D.C. I ran past the White House, by the Watergate Mall, along the Potomac River, up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and around the Washington Monument. It was a nice reminder, during this political silly season, that our great country is so much bigger than any presidential race......THANK GOD!
So, back to running. The point is that for me and any other distance runner, 18 miles is not very much distance. But it was a great start back for me. I have a few little health issues I'm concerned about, but nothing that is going to stop me at this point. I'm going to stay on track and build mileage over the next several weeks. Tommorrow I will run 4 or 5 miles and I will end the running week on Saturday with 8 miles for a total of around 22 miles. Slowly, I will build mileage and build endurance while working on my speed.
Eight miles is a bit of a big deal because it's the point at which marathon training programs start. If you can run 8 miles, you can start a marathon program. And the real secret is that if you can start a marathon program, you can finish it. Most people just never get to where they could start.
So, Saturday will be eight miles nice and slow. I'm going out of my way to stay slow and keep expectations down as a build a base of miles. Slowly, I've started to incorporate a few pick-ups and an occasional faster mile, but no real expectations other than building miles.
The real question is.....where will I run my goal marathon this spring? Hmmmm, not sure yet.
